Hair Loss in Women

Contrary to popular belief both men and women can suffer from hair loss, in fact as many as two thirds of women suffer from thinning hair at some point in their lives.

Fortunately unlike male hair loss, thinning hair for women is very unlikely to result in complete baldness. But where as hair loss for a man is depressing, hair loss for women is a "downright catastrophe" says Elizabeth Steel of Hairline International.

An estimated eight million women in the UK suffer from serious hair loss and there are many causes for it, here we list the most common forms:

Androgenic Alopecia

For men it is call male pattern baldness due to the well defined pattern in which hair is lost starting with a receding hair line. For women there is no receding hair line, hair is lost uniformly over the entire head. This type of hair loss typically occurs to older women - it gets more noticeable after the menopause and the causes are usually genetic.

Telogen Effluvium

A temporary form of hair loss due to shock or emotional stress. Hair is lost uniformly over the head. There can be a number of different causes, a few of the most common for women are:

childbirth, fever, surgery, chronic illness, sudden weight loss, severe psychological stress, certain medications.

Naturally a hair will grow for a few years then rest for a few months, shed and the re grow again. Telogen effluvium occurs when shock causes the hair to go into a resting state prematurely.

Alopecia Areata

Also known as spot baldness Alopecia areata is a temporary form of hair loss. Hair is lost in patched, hence the common name. It usually effects younger women and about 1% of people suffer from it. It is thought to be caused by problems with the immune system but has also been linked to the genes and emotional stress.

Treatments

Clinical studies have shown that Nourkrin can halt thinning hair in women and stimulate new re growth. In one study 90% of women showed a 50% improvement; and 83% People suffering from Alopecia Totalis (a form of Androgenic Alopecia that can result in complete baldness) observed permanent re growth of hair.
