Britt Ekland

Bond Girl Britt Ekland

"Hair-loss hell made me a prisoner in my home"

"After taking Nourkrin for just a few months I am delighted with the results!"

She was one of the world's most glamorous women - with a glorious career, a gorgeous body and a trademark shock of luxurious blonde hair that was famous theworld over.

But after having her third child, something went terribly wrong with Britt Ekland's locks - she started to lose them. She recalls: "It grew really lush and thick when I was pregnant with TJ.

"I've always had compliments about my hair, but I was so proud of that pregnancy hair,"

There was a horrible surprise in store after the birth... it began to fall out. At first, this wasn't too much of a worry. It is common to have a thick glossy pelt during pregnancy due to a rise in hormones which gradually diedownafter delivery and the extra hair falls out.

But while most women find they have returned to normal after six or 12 months, Britt did not.

In fact, the alarmed actress, 44 at the time, found her hair was thinning more and more.

"You can't believe how distressing it is to have such a problem," says Britt

The Swede was one of the most desirable women on the planet. A Bond girl - she starred opposite Roger Moore in The Man With The Golden Gun - she was married to Peter Sellers and was Rod Stewart's girlfriend for two years.

She later married Slim Jim Phantom of pop group Stray Cats, with whom she had TJ.

"My two husbands really admired my hair," sherecalls. "Men like long hair they can run their hands through."

"Peter would always compliment my hair. I was only 20 when we married and at that time if you had told me women can lose hair in the same way as men, I would have laughed and thought it was a joke."

But it was no laughing matter - sometimes she was too embarrassed to go out.

"There were times when I would shut myself in for days becausemy hair had got so bad," she says. "I'd wake up in the morning and find more on my pillow. I didn't know what to do."

"I just spent a fortune, thousands of pounds, on shampoos and conditioners that were meant to give your hair body."

"But how can a shampoo make up for hair loss? It's not possible. I was desperate and I was sucked in by advertising. It was a real trauma."

Britt's one comfort was the fact that she was not alone.

"When I started looking into it, I discovered one in three women can experience the same problem at some time, which is shocking," she says.

"There is plenty out there about how men can cope with thinning, but very little for women ."

Still, it all became too much when she went through a relatively late menopause at the age of 54.

"That's when it started vanishing in large amounts," she recalls. "I started using extensions - but I don't like them."

"They are high maintenance and seem to dominate your life."

Britt decided to ditch the extensions and got by with a wig for her stage work. But the knowledge it was not her hair troubled her and she couldn't bring herself to wear it every day.

"My hair was getting so thin in places that I could see the shininess of my scalp in the mirror," she admits.

"I was wearing a baseball cap but it was so un-me."

From then on Britt kept her hair hidden under a cap that only ever came off if she was sure she could fluff her hair up in private.

"I was very good at getting something from nothing," she says. "I'd step into the ladies with the cap on and come out looking sort of reasonable."

But a lot of the time Britt felt crushed. "I would be all done up and looking glamorous with some outfit and then felt I looked awful because the hair was letting me down," she recalls.

"I was paranoid. Things probably weren't as bad as they seemed but it was my hair and so everything was magnified."

In 2004, after years of suffering, Britt, who divides her time between London, LA and Sweden, consulted the owner of her trusted health food shop in London's King's Road.

He had started to stock a tablet supplement called Nourkrin that several of his female customers, with various degrees of hair thinning, were starting to get excited about.

It contains various minerals, including silica which is found in hair and fingernails, and a secret ingredient said to come from a "marine animal, possibly a shark".

Whatever it is, Britt says it started to work for her - although at first she thought it hadn't.

On a visit to her Swedish hairdresser she was convinced she'd lost even more after spotting short stumpy hairs sprouting from her hairline. "

I was in such a state that I feared the worst," she says.

"I looked at them and thought, 'Now it's getting really bad! My hair is not only thinning but it's breaking off.'

Tears were welling up in my eyes. "But then my hairdresser told me it was actually new hair growing through. My hair was starting to come back!"

"It would need time to grow. But it was coming back."

Britt now swears by her pills and says that as soon as she fails to take them she notices the difference.

"I make sure I have a good supply wherever I go," she adds. "It's changed my life."

"I had become tetchy because I was so unhappy about my hair, and now my friends have noticed a real difference in me."

"I was a bit of a recluse and would avoid going out if I didn't need to.

"Now I can go out and hold my head up and not feel embarrassed at all."

"It's wonderful not to have to worry about my hairanymore."
